Math at BHS

This is info I found in the BHS handbook.

"For all courses in the Mathematics sequences, students must earn a year grade of “C” or better in order to progress to the next course.
There are two reasons for this policy. “C” is the minimum grade the UC/CSU systems will accept for a course to count towards entrance requirements and each semester of a college prep course builds on the preceding semester. Students earning less than a “C” rarely have the mathematical skills necessary to succeed in the next level."

"The Mathematics Department offers Honors classes in Geometry, Interactive Math 2, Algebra 2, Interactive Math 3, and Math Analysis. These courses are intended for students with exceptional mathematical talent who have the desire for additional work above and beyond the normal curriculum. These courses are designed for strong math students who are interested in exploring math in depth and are able to learn at an accelerated pace. Qualifications for honors classes include a combination of the following two criteria: 1) the placement test developed by the Berkeley Office of Evaluation and Assessment (B.E.A.); 2) recommendation from the current math teacher based on the student’s demonstration of self-motivation, exceptional work ethic, and satisfaction of course standards."

"Once placed in an Honors math course, students may not elect to move to a non-honors class."

"The course that students take in their freshman year at BHS is determined by the math they completed in middle school, teacher recommendation, and a placement test developed by the Berkeley Office of Evaluation and Assessment (B.E.A.). The placement test will be administered in April and notification of all placements will be sent to families in May. Different learning communities offer either the Interactive Math Progression or the Geometry progression."

This is not all of the information. I suggest downloading this PDF and researching a bit more than I have.
